Dr. James L. Powell

Dr. Jim Powell previously served as Chair of the Board. An ordained minister in the Western North Carolina Annual Conference, he has served an Appointment Beyond the Local Church in the Atlanta Area since 1982, and he was pastor of Mary Branan United Methodist Church in Atlanta for fifteen years. He now pastors another congregation. He is also a Licensed Psychologist and has been president of the Psychological Studies Institute, now known as Richmont Graduate University. He has been an adjunct faculty member in the Department of Counseling and Psychological Services at Georgia State as well as Georgia School of Professional Psychology. He maintains a clinical practice in Marietta as well as being a frequent expert witness in court. His education is from Duke University for his undergraduate studies, Duke Divinity School for seminary, and North Carolina State University at Raleigh for his Ph.D. in Clinical Community Psychology. Before his semiretirement in 2012, he served as President of the board of Hope for Family Harmony, board member of Clayton County Marriage and Family Initiative, an officer in the Clayton County Ministers Conference, and a founding member of the American Prayer Alliance. He has published articles and presented at conferences relating the science of psychology to the practice of ministry.
